Are Dining Rooms Still Standard?

Miles-Redd-Dining-Room-via-DiCorcia-Interior-Design-NY-NJUp until recently, formal dining rooms were pretty standard. Growing up, my parents had a formal dining room and a formal living room, both of which were rarely occupied.

One of the most debated decisions was whether or not to include a dining room. We love to entertain and I liked the idea of having one (although I think really liked the idea of decorating one and setting the table!), and were a little nervous about a sans-dining room resale. Ultimately, we opted for an open floor plan with a larger living room and kitchen. We carved out a “dining area” in the kitchen, and it really suits our more laid-back style of entertaining.

So my question to you is – are formal dining rooms worth the square footage they consume if you don’t have an abundant amount of space? If you have one, do you use it frequently? Do you prefer the formality of a dining room, or would you opt to use the space for something that would be utilized more often?

  1. we have a formal dining room and a formal living room. in addition, we have 2 “family” rooms and a good sized kitchen. the house is 28 years old…..if i had it to do over, i would def go with your layout. we now use the living room everyday, no steps and don’t use the stepdown family room or the upstairs computer/family room.

our formal dining room has been converted to an office/craft/blogging room, surrounded with windows. i LOVE it!!

i would love for you to see it, stop by one day, you will see how TOO big it is for us now!!

    • An office/craft/blogging room is one of my dreams! We have the tiny office, which is totally fine for now, but one day I’d love to have a full-on crafting station – a la Martha Stewart, of course! I’d LOVE to stop by one day, I’ve heard your home is beautiful!

  2. I love the idea of a formal dining room and can’t imagine my dream home without one!! I love to entertain and have family meals, plus I think people should totally use their ‘formal’ dining room for dinner every night as a way to unwind after a long day :). I like the idea of a family room plus a living room. The living room doesn’t have to be super formal but to me the family room has a tv and is a relaxing zone while the living room is a great place to entertain.

  3. I don’t have a formal dining space and I don’t think I would even utilize one. Right now my kitchen table seats 6 comfortably and is in my kitchen/living room. My house is one big open space, which I love for entertaining. If I am still in the kitchen cooking, I can still socialize with everyone 🙂 -alecia
