Lately I’ve noticed many mid-sized homes reallocating the space in lieu of a bigger kitchens with eat-in areas, or to serve another purpose that would be utilized more frequently. When Billy and I renovated The Bungalow we had around 2,000 sq. ft. to work with. One of the most debated decisions was whether or not to include a dining room. We love to entertain and I liked the idea of having one (although I think really liked the idea of decorating one and setting the table!), and were a little nervous about a sans-dining room resale. Ultimately, we opted for an open floor plan with a larger living room and kitchen. We carved out a “dining area” in the kitchen, and it really suits our more laid-back style of entertaining.
So my question to you is – are formal dining rooms worth the square footage they consume if you don’t have an abundant amount of space? If you have one, do you use it frequently? Do you prefer the formality of a dining room, or would you opt to use the space for something that would be utilized more often?
